Notes | This book was first published in English in New York in 1944 before being published in Austria in 1947, where it became a bestseller. It constitues an example of a text which was somewhat changed for the Austrian public. With five editions in only two years it is one of Lothar's most successful books. In 1948 the book was made into a film starring Paula Wessely (Kriegleder 2021, 208). As in other work of his, historical figures make cameo appearances, in this case Mozart, which encourages stereotypical and cliché representations of Austria as part of a deliberate attempt to convey traditional "Austrian" sentiments by way of creating a clear-cut dichotomy between Germany and Austria (see Kriegleder 2021, 210). |
