Notes | The book was a big success, selling ca. 640,000 copies. A shortened German version thereof was only published in 1961. The novel has a two-part structure that spans the years between 1939 and 1941, with the first part focussing on the expulsion of South Tyroleans and the second on Czech anti-Nazi resistance (Kriegleder 2021, 205). The novel projects a positive image of Austrian opponents of the Nazi ideology, some of whom become victims of the regime following their acts of resistance (see Kriegleder, "The Case for Austrian Independence. Ernst Lothar’s Exile Novels") |
