Notes | In 1933, Shirer got work as a copy editor for the New York Herald in Paris. He held this position until, less than a year later, he was invited to join Hearst’s Universal News Service in its bureau in Berlin to cover the alarming developments in Nazi Germany. He immediately accepted and moved to Berlin in August 1934 (where he stayed until 1937), which gave him a chance to observe at close range the fateful developments, which were to provide the material for his later account in his popular "Berlin Diary". |
