Notes Alfred Schütz was an Austrian-born philosopher and social phenomenologist who combined sociological and phenomenological traditions in his work. His thinking played an important role in the development of modern social theory. The posthumously published "Collected Papers by Alfred Schütz" (1962) significantly influenced the further development of interpretive sociology. Schütz's work was also continued posthumously by two of his former students, Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann. The latter was instrumental in bringing Schütz's ideas back to Europe, not least through his posthumous publication of Schütz's writings in "Structures of the Life-World" (1989). (see Prisching in "Ideas Crossing the Atlantic," (177-190).
