Notes | In his autobiography, Engel-Janosi illustrates how individual experiences relate to their historical contexts. His emigration as a scion of a family of uppermiddle class Jewish industrialists is rendered in his vivid autobiography, covering his youth and early manhood in Vienna. It also relates his challenges in the USA, where Engel-Janosi interacted with other exiles while indefatigably publishing and teaching for twenty years at the Catholic University in Washington. The autobiography highlights his eventual return to Vienna, where archival resources were essential for his research, most importantly the Wiener Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv. In his autobiography he also notes the disappointing encounters with Austrian bureaucracy upon his return and resulting feelings of "foreignness". |
