Notes | The book is a “picaresque romance,” [according to Thomas Mann] which encapsulates the powerful Wanderlust of the author that was not fulfilled at that stage. It offers a succession of dramatic adventures experienced by a young American who hitchhikes through Asia and shows a thirst for excitement and sensual curiosity. The reader is struck by the mixture of dreamlike fantasies with the vivid realism of certain scenes, as the central character, who is also the narrator, moves from Beirut through Syria, Persia, India, and Burma to China. This work of the imagination elicited general praise and made Prokosch famous (Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks pp.232-233). |
