Notes | The story, which is set in Vienna, juxtaposes the death in a hospital of Mr. Fuchs, an old Marxist city official, of wounds inflicted in the Civil War, and the assassination of Chancellor Dollfuss by Nazi insurgents in July 1934, events which occurred when Spender and Muriel Gardiner were in or near Vienna. (Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks, p. 184) |
