| Notes | Weigel devotes his first newspaper commentary to Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy can only to a limited degree be seen as a model for "imported" anti-Communism in Austria as only Friedrich Torberg had witnessed the McCarthy era in the US and hardly been active as an anti-communist while living there. Nonetheless, a link between McCarthy and Austrian anti-Communists was often established, mostly in a negative manner by communist publications, such as Volksstimme (see Straub, 149). |
