Notes | Since Loos had only been to Paris and not to Vienna prior to writing the book, the transatlantic 'grand tour' as it is portrayed in the book was probably largely inspired by the numerous reports on life in Vienna and, more generally, Central Europe by foreign correspondents during the early 1920s. Another influence which may account for the largely stereotypical portrayal of the city and of famous Viennese figures such as Sigmund Freud can be found in the form of Austrian emigrants involved in the cinema world of Hollywood at the time (see Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks, p. 79-81). |
