Notes Parts of the had appeared in various American journals, while Lewisohn was still in Europe. The second chapter of this book, entitled “Creative Exiles” (48- 80) deals with the topic of the assimilation of the Jews in Central Europe, their contribution to its culture, which seemed largely unacknowledged. Lewisohn also comments on the rise of anti-Semitism, which was often linked to nationalism and myths of race, and he thus located the issue in broader trends observed in Central Europe (Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks, 68).
