Notes | Freeman's depiction of Vienna and its inhabitants is based on hearsay and second hand knowledge from people who had actually lived in Vienna. He seems to have primarily relied on the extensive reports of fellow journalists, such as Dorothy Thompson, G. E. R. Gedye and especially John Gunther, as well as have benefitted from his close friendship with the Viennese emigrants Friedrich and Steffi Kiesler whom he had encountered in the USA. His Viennese characters represent common stereotypes of almost every social and political segment of society, including the "typical" musical family and ranging from members of the aristocracy to labour unionists, the Jewish ethnic community to monarchists and conservative Catholics. For the second part of the novel, set in a concentration camp, Freeman seems to have relied on Paul Massing's Fatherland. |
