Notes | "In the collected edition of 1980, brought out in New York by Doubleday and then as a paperback by Penguin, the author grouped her texts according to their time and place of origin. The “Early Group,” including stories about her family members, is followed by the “Austrian Group 1933-1938,” with four stories,15 which in turn precedes a section named “English Group 1935- 1936,”with another four stories. The “French Group 1939-1966” comprises eleven narratives, while the “Military Occupation Group 1945-1950,” with stories set in Germany under Allied occupation, is succeeded by an “American Group 1942-1966.” This arrangement reflects Boyle’s residence in Austria, followed by her stay in Britain in the mid-1930s, her move to France and then back to the USA, from where she returned to Europe and then spent five years in occupied Germany. " (Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks, p.196). |
