Notes | The story is part of a projected long novel, including Einbaum's emigration to the US. It is based on some of Morris' experiences in Vienna as well as some of the people he met there. The eponymous protagonist can be read as Morris' alter ego while the character of Sophia Horvath appears to show similarities with Maria Szápáry and another young woman whom Morris met at the Foreign Students Club in Vienna (Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks, p. 158-159) |
