Notes | The Gunthers rented a spacious apartment in the villa in Dollinergasse 5 in Vienna-Doebling, the 19th district. In "The Lost City" Gunther also offered an exact representation of their comfortable residence in Dollinergasse, here called Mozartgasse. Mason rents it from the family of a Jewish physician, Dr. Wallenstein, who has experienced anti- Semitism at the university when he is forced to retire at age 56. The Gunthers did in fact share the villa with the family of a university lecturer named Guido Engelmann, who probably suffered the discrimination ascribed to the fictional Dr. Wallenstein.Gunther’s correspondence corroborates that he seems to have invited many visitors to Vienna and locals to meet and even stay in his spacious residence. Among Gunther’s guests were Nicholas Roosevelt, then the American Minister in Budapest. The rented part of the villa of the Gunthers even was the setting for a meeting of Chancellor Dollfuss and the new American minister Messersmith. (Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks, p.138). |
