| Notes | On 21 November 1941 he was released from the Canadian detention camp and moved to the Mendel family in Toronto to study English Literature at Toronto University. He was the first modern Canadian writer to write about his experiences living in Canadian exile. In 1988 he received the Order of Canada. |
