Notes Broch had visited the American South as early as 1907 with the intention of establishing good supply links for the cotton used in the textile mill owned by his family in Teesdorf, but his emigration to England and later to the USA occurred only late in July 1938 after he had been in custody for three weeks. (Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks, 57).
