Notes | In 1934, after the events of the Austrian Civil War, Muriel Gardiner became involved in anti-Fascist activities and supported her partner, and later husband, Joseph Buttinger, then chairman of the Socialist underground and a leader of the Anti-Fascist movement. Using the code name "Mary", she actively worked in the underground , contributing money, hiding places and later provided affidavits for those persecuted by the Nazis after the Anschluss who wanted to escape to the United States. |
