Notes | Huebsch, after having been relieved of the economic problems with his publishing house when it merged with Viking, was able to concentrate on the acquisition of important literature in Europe, especially in German, and established very close relationships with a number of writers such as Louis Untermeyer, Ludwig Lewisohn or Stefan Zweig. Zweig abruptedly moved to England in 1934 and with the outbreak of Worl War Two, Zweig, fearing its consequences for his status in England, where many refugees were later regarded as "enemy aliens" and interned, looked for a transatlantic exile. Zweig turned to his friend Huebsch, who had also made him a consultant of Viking Press. Franz Werfel, another prominent Austrian author, also requested and received personal assistance from Huebsch. |
