Notes | The British travel writer and novelist Ethel Mannin evoked a nostalgic picture of the precarious period of Austria’s independence in the Indian summer of the late 1930s. It was included in her book German Journey, based on her fact-finding tour through the bombed cities of Germany and Austria in 1947, and published in the following year. The writer, who had spent much time in Austria in the early 1930s, establishing close friendships, had done a good deal of writing there (Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks 230). In her account of post-war Vienna, she notes the widespread poverty but also highlights the persistent joie de vivre of the Viennese (Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks 277). |
