Notes | In his almost daily letters and postcards, Joseph Freeman reported to her about his European trip, mentioning meetings with Richard Strauss in Garmisch and Dorothy Thompson in Paris. Especially notable is his long letter from Linz in which he describes nostalgically looking down the Danube towards the city of Vienna, clarifying he's never been to Linz (though having described it in Never Call Retreat) but finding it "beautiful" (see his letter to her from 6 August 1945, Joseph Freeman Papers, Columbia University Libraries, New York). |
