Notes In 1934 William Shirer was invited to join Hearst’s Universal News Service in its bureau in Berlin to cover the alarming developments in Nazi Germany. He immediately accepted and moved to Berlin in August 1934, which gave him a chance to observe at close range the fateful developments, which were to provide the material for his later account in his popular "Berlin Diary".
