Notes | In his official capacity as president of the newly founded Anglo-American Press Association, Gunther reached out to politicians, diplomats and cultural pundits of Vienna and invited them to dinners and luncheons at which the prominent guests were encouraged to speak confidentially to the foreign journalists, thus (indirectly) offering insights into developments in the political arena. These contacts with diplomats and politicians as well as with his peers in the journalistic profession – he owed a major debt of gratitude to Marcel Fodor – were of great importance for Gunther’s success as a foreign correspondent. Several American diplomats also exchanged friendly letters with Gunther and gladly accepted his invitation and hospitality. |
