Notes	For Wright Morris, the Foreign Students' Club provided an opportunity to earn a modest income by offering conversation in English. In "Solo," he describes a few of the different people whom he met there. Most notably, he made the acquaintance of the Hungarian countess Maria(nne) Szápáry who was then working on a doctoral thesis in history and with whom he held conversation lessons over the course of three weeks. Afterwards, this interaction developed into an intense and intimate friendly correspondence between 1935 and 1938. At the student club, Morris also spent a lot of time conversing with Bogislav von Lindheim, a graduate teacher of English and, apparently, also the Club secretary (see Zacharasiewicz, Transatlantic Networks, pp. 154-155 ).
