Notes | William Shirer was hired to make broadcasts for the Columbia Broadcasting System, after having lost his job with the International News Service in Berlin in August 1937. He soon received instructions from his new employers to set up his headquarters in Vienna. His diary contains shorthand descriptions of the political consequences, notably the dramatic events ending in the night of 11 March 1938, with the Nazi takeover and the Anschluss. Shirer was the first to arrange a program combining eye-witness accounts of these historic events with comments from various capitals of Europe to a roundup broadcast via the CBS radio network. |
